Fantasy Baseball All-Star Injury Lineup

The 2008 baseball season certainly has been an interesting year with a large percentage of prominent ball players “hitting” the disabled list with all kinds of injuries. Injuries of course, are one of the major unknowns in baseball that can kill a fantasy baseball season.

Depending on how you come up with rankings, at least 7 of the top 25 players in spring training are on or have spent time on the DL thus far this season. Unfortunately, the trend of injuries to key players hasn’t gone down in numbers (and probably won’t as the season rolls on).
Here’s an all-star lineup of baseball players currently on the DL.
- Catcher: Victor Martinez (Right elbow surgery - out 6-8 weeks)
- First Base: Albert Pujols (Strained left calf - out 3-4 weeks)
- Second Base: Chone Figgins (Eligible at 2B in Yahoo Leagues and coming off the DL today)
- Short Stop: Rafael Furcal (Lower back strain - should return by the end of June)
- Third Base: Ryan Zimmerman (Small labral tear in left shoulder - out 4-6 weeks)
- Outfield: Alfonso Soriano (Broken left ring finger - out 4-6 weeks)
- Outfield: Eric Byrnes (Strained right hamstring - possibly coming off the DL in the near future)
- Outfield: Gary Sheffield
- Designated Hitter: David Ortiz (Torn tendon sheath in left wrist - undetermined time frame)
- Starting Pitcher: Chris Carpenter - (Elbow surgery - possible return by early August)
- Starting Pitcher: Daisuke Matsuzaka - (Mild right rotator cuff strain - going on a rehab assignment next week)
- Closing Pitcher: J.J.Putz (Hyperextended right elbow - to be determined)
There’s also a nice bench working as well with guys like Carlos Peña and Richie Weeks (2B) hitting and Adam Wainwright, Joel Zumaya or Fausto Carmona pitching.
Hopefully you’re one of the lucky fantasy managers who’s roster hasn’t been bitten by the injury bug but if you are, take solace in the fact that most of these guys will be back around of before the All-Star break. There will be time to recoup from the loss and catch up for lost statistics.

That being said, it’s not a fun time for one of the fantasy baseball managers in my head-to-head league, who has 4 of the guys listed above (Pujols, Martinez, Hafner and Weeks).
Best of luck with your season.
